Success:
Earl Nightingale defines success as,
“the progressive realization of a worthy ideal”.
[Source: ‘The Strangest Secret in the
world’, 1950. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yOsQHlH9k8].
Any person that works continually
towards a predetermined goal, and achieves it, is considered a successful
person. Simply put, Success can be judged, based upon achievement
of your goals.
Examples:
- A person, who is obese, sets a specific goal
to lose weight and become healthy. He starts eating healthier foods,
exercises regularly, and in a few weeks time, looks fit and healthy.
He has achieved his goal, and hence he is considered successful.
- A stock broker buys his dream home that he
aimed for, from the money he made using trading, he is considered
successful.
Undoubtedly, success is important and
in more ways necessary to survive and stay motivated. In
the above examples however, have these ‘successful people’ contributed anything
valuable to the world?
Value Creation:
Value creation on the
other hand, is all about one’s contribution to the world. It
is about making the positive difference for the others.
The people who have the most influence on our lives, the people who have
changed the way we think, our outlook towards the world, and changed the way we
live, for the better, are the people of value rather than people of success.
Let us consider one of the above examples here:
- The person, who suffered from obesity, chose to take actions to lose weight, and live a healthier lifestyle; he achieved his goal, and became a success story.
- Soon, he realizes that there are lots of people out there who are suffering from the same problem, and he knows he can help resolve this problem, because he has had the first-hand experience of it.
- He designs and conducts a workshop, writes extensively about his journey to a healthier lifestyle, and shares all his experiences. People take-in his advice, work the plan and they become successful too. With this, he has contributed something positive. He has helped people think and lead a better and healthier life. He has created value.
Value Creation and Success is not an
either or proposition. Both are absolutely essential, the urge is that
the Creation of Value should take precedence.
Some of the greatest discoveries like
the electricity, inventions like the light bulb and the telephone have had
tremendous positive impact on our lives. The men responsible are some of
the most valuable men in the world.

How can you create value?
Creating Value is a simple process!
But simple isn't necessarily easy, as the wise-men say.
In order to create/add
value, all you have to do is express your real self.
There are problems, all
around us, hundreds of them. Most people choose to complain and then
learn to live with them; they never ask the necessary questions to resolve the
problems. They even become oblivious to the fact over time. Your
opportunities lie here, just by looking around you, intently, always asking the
question, “What is missing in this picture?”, and then you start thinking of
ways to resolve those problems – one at a time.
You know that Imagination
is everything (scroll down to refer the title), so start imagining and expressing your real self. Let the
world see and experience your creation, let them come back for more. And
with that you would have created value.
Start Creating now, Good
luck!!
Please share your thoughts, comments and feedback to derive more value..
Wow that's really valuable and inspiring. After reading this feels that how selfish we are until somebody makes you realise it just like what you did, Manjunath. As you said we just adjust to the circumstances and live with it without even giving a try to resolve it. Great advice at the right time. Thanks Manjunath.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Harini. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad, you feel this post is valuable and inspiring to you. It's good to get inspired, it's better to take action - 'immediately'. Whatever your problem, do not postpone, focus all your energy on resolving it NOW!! All the best!
DeleteEVEN THOUGH I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ENTIRE THING YOUR WRITING IS VERY INSPIRING AND HONEST. BUT I GUESS YOU NEED TO LOOK AT OTHER PERSPECTIVE ALSO
ReplyDeleteThanks Sameer, for your valuable feedback. If you elaborate on your views, I could get a little clarity, that could really help. Thanks again for taking your time!!
DeleteThe margin between success and value creation is completely justified in your blog. Your blogs should definitely get into my favourites list!!
